Il LAP Laboratorio permanente di Arte Pubblica goes to Milan for the final Celeste Prize

Dead line Settember 5, 2013

The Public Art Award, the first international competition dedicated to public art, aimed to explore the Basilicata region, is addressed to all of you artists and creative people in general who want to deal with the practice of public art. We believe that to breathe art in urban spaces is a necessity for all artists and users, and to stimulate the creation of ad hoc interventions on Basilicata is an opportunity to measure their art to public spaces, having a strong visibility.

This opportunity is offered by LAP | Public Art Award for artists and creative people of all nationalities, without age limit, paying a participation fee of 40,00 € only.

The Jury of the Award, composed by the President Spencer Tunick, internationally renowned artist, by Bruno Di Marino, a media critic, and Basak Malone, New York gallerist, will explore the public art Project presented by each artist, according to two basic criteria: how much Basilicata is at the centre of the project and how much it reflects the fundamental characteristics of public art, first of all, the involvement of the communities that will host the work. The Project can be carried out with all possible media, photography, painting, sculpture, digital documentation of performative actions, video, 2D and 3D animation, provided that it can be reproduced in digital print or video.

The decision to split the competition into two sections, Photography and Video does not mean in any way to penalize the different ways of making art, but is given by LAP's 2 exhibition  modes of works.

The Photography section has, as exhibition platform, the 6 exhibition spaces in Potenza (active since 2009) and the other 2 in Corleto Perticara and Calvello (opening soon), consisting of large panels of 500x250 cm hosting print images reproducing the works made with any art technique, from photography to painting, fom sculpture to installation, from digital documentation of performative actions up to the video frame.

The Video section has, as exhibition platform, the historic buildings and monuments of Basilicata on which the video will be screened with the technique of urban screen. In this case each type of work will be evaluated and exhibited through its reproduction in video projections.

The competition will award two artists regardless of age, one in the photography section and one in the video section, with prize money totaling € 8,000.00, and the exposure within the spaces of the LAP in the City of Potenza and on historical monuments of the Municipalities of the Basilicata region with the technique of the Urban Screen.

The Public Art Award, will also select 20 artists under 35 to participate in the Advanced Course in Visual Arts, from Sept. 16 to 22 with the professors Bruno Di Marino, Bianco and Valente, Emilio Fantin, Anna Detheridge Mariadelaide Cuozzo. The Advanced Course in Visual Arts relies on the partnership of DiCEM Department of European Cultures and the Mediterranean: Architecture, Environment, Cultural Heritage, which guarantees all the participants certificates of participation and credits to the members of the University of Basilicata. It's possible to enroll in the course of Visual Arts even though you exceed the age of 35, sending your curriculum and sign the fee for participation (400 €, max 20 seats)

The projects of the 50 shortlisted artists will create the Archives of LAP | Public Art Award and promoted by events of urban screen in the 131 Municipalities of the Basilicata region and not only, through publications of the project LAP & Smart Places that are expected in 8 outputs until the end of 2014.

LAP | Urban Screen | Forenza

LAP | Public Art Award | Urban Screen | Private Conversation

Forenza, August 18, 2013

The Basilicata region is a candidate to become the Italian laboratory of public art par excellence, from an international perspective, with the participation of artists from around the world, thanks to Public Art Award, the first contest of public art dedicated to the ehancement of Basilicata' s territory and history. Important stage of this process, achieved thanks to the  Basilicata Region investment in the cultural sector, with funding from the Ministry of Youth, is the summer program of the LAP Laboratorio permanente di Arte Pubblica 2013, with the Urban screen of the work Private Conversation in Acerenza, Forenza, Calvello, Corleto Perticara, Potenza. The programming, thanks to the support of the Lucanian Municipalities and the partnership with Total E&P Italy Spa, opens concretely the prospect of the creation in the Basilicata region of the first workshop for public art at regional level in Italy.

After the first leg on August 13 in Acerenza, the second stage of the summer program of the LAP Laboratorio permanente di Arte Pubblica 2013 is on August 18 in Forenza. Patroness is the poet Anna Santoliquido, originally from Forenza,  attended by the mayor of Forenza, Francesco Mastrandrea, and the artist Elisa Laraia, Art Director of Lap | Public Art Award, with the staff of LAP, Monica  Nicastro and Mio D'Andrea Santoro. Some of the poems of Anna Santoliquido sound form the basis of the ad hoc work  Private Conversation, together with evidence of the citizens of Forenza, from the very young to the elderly who have given their contribution telling their deep relationship with the land. The work Private Conversation, contemporary anthropological portrait of Basilicata, will be video-projected on the facade of the Convent of SS. Crucifix, at 9.00 pm. Particularly impressive, from the point of view of the landscape and heritage, the church of the Crucifix, built in 1680, part of the Capuchin convent. Its interior contains wooden altars, paintings of 1500, a painting of Santa Maria della Stella dating back to XIV sec., a choir of the sixteenth century, and a precious wooden crucifix of the seventeenth century. The choice of this place, in particular, translates the meaning of the project LAPLaboratorio permanente di Arte Pubblica to compare ancient heritage and contemporary art, in view of the enhancement of Basilicata.

The LAP Laboratorio permanente di Arte Pubblica  was born in Potenza with 7 permanent exhibition spaces in 2009 and designed by Elisa Laraia, thanks to the support of the Mayor of Potenza, Vito Santarsiero. The  summer program concludes on September 16 with the Urban Screen on Teatro Stabile in Potenza.
The citizens of Basilicata, early protagonists of the LAP, come to life on the facades of the historic buildings of the region, while their voices are propagated in the urban space, squares, alleys, each telling their own experience, places of affection, poems, the dreams and aspirations of a region that chooses contemporary art to illuminate its history, between recollection of the past and anticipation of the future.
